United Democratic Party holds press conference on national issues

By Aaron Humes: Leader of the Opposition Moses “Shyne” Barrow says there is no justification for any Minister to intervene as the Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture did in the recent case of a public officer who was sent on administrative leave.

“It is wrong, it contravenes public service regulations and it is corruption, specifically use of office for private gain,” Barrow said, citing the threats made when the officer went to inspect the invasive and endangered plants brought in.

Further, according to Barrow, the mother-in-law of the business owner works at the gas station the Briceno family owns in Orange Walk Town and this was a favor allegedly done.

Barrow said the current administration has taken the Belizean people’s confidence for granted, outwardly conforming to principles of good governance while privately practicing abuse.

And it’s not the first time, Barrow pointed out, referencing the San Ignacio incident involving the former Minister of Health’s driver and the treatment of former Director of Health Services Dr. Marvin Manzanero.

The best way Belizeans can protest this abuse is at the ballot box in the forthcoming Village Council Elections, Barrow said.

This is Barrow’s first formal press conference since becoming Party Leader after the recent Leadership Convention.
