By Aaron Humes: Reiterating its earlier statement on the issue this week, Cabinet has said it is “committed to continuing to shepherd the process with respect for all concerned and considers this an inspiring and encouraging part of Belize’s democratic system,” referring to the triggering of a potential referendum on the Cannabis and Industrial Hemp Control and Licensing Bill.
The bill, which has passed both Houses of the National Assembly, has been postponed from being signed into law by the Governor-General in order to give time for further consultation as well as to await the result of the churches’ collective petition initiative for a referendum.
Some 20,108 signatures have been submitted, and in accordance with the Referendum Act, the petition will now undergo the process of vetting and verification by the Elections and Boundaries Department. The minimum number of verified and vetted signatures to meet the threshold to trigger the referendum is 18,669.
The Executive closed its collective remarks by stating, “Cabinet remains confident that in the end the right and best decisions will be made as a country.”
