By Benjamin Flowers: Today marks the one-week countdown to the launch of the 2022 Population and Housing Census, the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) reports.
The SIB says that the official launch of the census will take place on Thursday, May 12, with the actual groundwork to begin on Friday, May 13. The census is being held under the theme “Count me in” which was chosen in 2020 when the census was originally to have taken place, but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Acting Deputy Director-General of the Miriam Willoughby, told our newsroom today that the logistics are in the final phase, with district offices for the census preparing to open as of Monday, May 9.
“Right now we’re wrapping up training for the enumerators. That started on April 20 and it ends tomorrow,” Willoughby said.
She went on to assure the public that, despite the COVID-19 protocols being lifted, census field staff will still be wearing masks and social distancing, to alleviate health and safety concerns. She also noted that interviews will be conducted with the aid of tablets, to avoid paper questionnaires and further limit contact.
Data collection for the census is expected to last between 8-10 weeks. Currently, Belize’s population is estimated at around 450,000.
