By Aaron Humes: Appearing this morning on the LOVE FM Morning Show, Commissioner of Police Chester Williams reported that a renewed strategy presenting a multisectoral approach to fighting crime will soon be released.

The Commissioner amplified his remarks on social media on Wednesday in the wake of being dragged into the Opposition United Democratic Party’s call for his resignation, stating that while he had worked well at the time with now-Senator Michael Peyrefitte, the former Minister knows well that fighting crime is a complex issue and that he does not appreciate it being made a political football. He further questioned what would have been the UDP’s plan had they retained power because states of emergency can only work for so long.

The Commissioner described as “ludicrous” the suggestion by Leader of the Opposition Moses “Shyne” Barrow that there is no security in Belize because except for the feuding gang members, most Belizeans can get around safely with no issues.

Since the change of government, Williams and Peyrefitte’s successor Kareem Musa has been reaching out to various stakeholders to put together the strategy, and a meeting was held on Wednesday, with Assistant Commissioner Dr. Richard Rosado formally representing the Police Department.

“There’s a lot that they have done and there is a lot more that needs to be done,” said the Commissioner, citing various components from education to youth intervention to sports and even infrastructure development, with the commitment from Minister Julius Espat to ensure employment by contract for at-risk youths. The farming parcel donated by Alvaro Rosado will be the centerpiece of an agriculture component and there will be another trip to the Mountain Pine Ridge.

But until the strategy is fully implemented, police have expanded operations and stepped up interventions to suppress crime.

Williams also cited revision of policy and creation of new units such as the Cyber Crime Unit.
