Westrac Ltd is holding the ‘Your World Is Our World’ half marathon relay and 7K run on Saturday, May 28.

The race is a charity run in aid of the Cayo Deaf Education and Farm Institute, located approximately 1.5 miles on the Central Farm to Spanish Lookout Road.

“The funds will go towards helping the Cayo Deaf Institute to build a multi-purpose facility for their events,” said Westrac Ltd. Marketing Officer Diana Castillo.

“Westrac is helping them with that and what we are doing in this instance is that we’ll be doubling the amount for every registration. The registration is $50 per person, so for every person that is registered Westrac will be giving $100.”

Registration deadline for the ‘Your World Is Our World’ half marathon relay and 7K run which promises $11,000 in prizes, is Friday, May 13.

The Cayo Deaf Institute was established in 1998 as a boarding school for children five to 17.

“The goal of this institute is to help hearing impaired or deaf people get an education which is an extra challenge because they cannot hear,” said Klaas Penner, the school’s administrator/principal.

The CDI also teaches vocational skills, housekeeping, and farming. Penner said CDI has a farm in which they have a variety of livestock and crops.

CDI charges a $5.00 annual registration fee. Parents are asked for $50 per month tuition but if they can’t afford it, the students are taken in anyway, said Penner

Principal Penner said they already have a sports court over which they plan to build the multi-purpose facility.

“We already have the floor which we use for some activities, for sports, but … if we had a roof over it we can use it for other events. Just this last Christmas we had planned on having an outdoor event, but because of the rain, we had to find another solution. If we had a roof over that … it would be a lot more useful,” said Penner.

“Through this initiative, you can donate by registering for the run and participating,” said Westrac in the race promotion on the Total Time Belize website.

“We invite everyone to join us in this beautiful journey. The children of today, are the Belize of tomorrow. Let’s join hands to make a positive contribution. With your help, we will brighten the smiles on the faces of these precious children; The Belize of tomorrow.”
