COVID update: Jump in cases going into the weekend

Posted: Friday, May 6, 2022. 6:32 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Ministry of Health and Wellness’ data confirms another jump in COVID-19 cases countrywide, with 34 reported today – most in a single day for some weeks now.

While the net rise is tempered by the number of recoveries (28), Belize now sits at 162 active cases with another 128 samples under investigation.

On the good side, only one person is presently hospitalized with the virus and is not in intensive care, and no new deaths have been reported.

16 of today’s new cases were reported in Belize City alone, followed by four in Belmopan (three in the city proper and one in the San Martin division). All district-level reporting areas except for San Pedro Town reported new cases: two in Corozal (both Corozal Town); three in Orange Walk (one each in Orange Walk Town, Carmelita and San Pablo); Belize (Ladyville and Lords’ Bank); Cayo (two in the Twin Towns and one in Camalote); Stann Creek (two in Hopkins, one in Dangriga) and Toledo (one in Punta Gorda).

Belizeans are reminded to practice social distancing as much as possible, wash hands and where necessary wear masks as the virus has not completely gone away.
