By BBN Staff: Twenty-one-year-old Chervin Tench, who was out on bail over a firearm offense, has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison in connection with another unlicensed firearm.
Tench appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court today, on a single count of “kept unlicensed firearm”, for a Glock 19 pistol that police say was not loaded.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge, but due to the nature of the offense, he was denied bail and remanded until June 6.
Police say that on Wednesday, a foot patrol unit noticed Tench running from the direction of Flamboyant Street to Oleander Street. The officers followed him and said they saw him take the gun from his pants and throw it on top of an apartment building. They apprehended him and brought him back to the building where the gun was recovered.
Tench claims that while in police custody, he was badly beaten, and claims that his relatives have the undershirt he was wearing at the time which is covered in blood from the police brutalizing him.
Tench had been remanded to prison in March on two counts of kept unlicensed firearm, and two counts of kept unlicensed ammunition, but was granted bail sometime after.
