Port Authority begins salvage operation for grounded vessel near Moho Caye

Posted: Friday, May 6, 2022. 9:00 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: This evening the Belize Port Authority announced that it had begun the salvage operation to remove a grounded vessel from the vicinity of Moho Caye.

The MV Taza Mas is grounded in an area east of the island, which is located east of the Placencia Peninsula.

The vessel was edged 200 meters (656 feet or .124 of a mile) east of its grounded position by Hakim Marine Limited, using lift bags with the coordination of the Port Authority, and is now stable and in an upright position.

The Authority says it will continue the operation as soon as it receives additional equipment, ensuring that the vessel does not pose a threat to private properties and navigation.

No details were provided on how the vessel came to be grounded, who owns it and whether any damage was caused to marine structures including coral reefs in the area.
