Mexico and Belize conclude agreements on trade and agricultural development

By Aaron Humes: Prime Minister John Briceno described Mexico as Belize’s “big brother” standing ready in support.

And that support will consist in part of elimination of import taxes that will reduce costs for Belize to export rice, livestock and other primary crops to feed the large Mexican population.

Mexican expertise will support Belizean farmers in the “Saving Lives” project, which will benefit 2 thousand farmers to provide opportunities to support Belizeans working in agriculture.

The Prime Minister also extended an invitation to President of Mexico Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador to return at his leisure, noting that four hours is just too short a time to enjoy Belize’s many attractions.

The President, after a reception at the Edward Laing Building grounds on corner Saints Mark and Charles Streets, Belize City departs Belize around 4 p.m. en route to Cuba.

In his remarks, he reminded journalists present of the long-standing relationship between the neighbors, dating back to when Mexico stood up for Belize’s Independence.

Now, he says, the countries and other neighbours such as Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador are preparing to work more closely together in matters of state, economy and regional cooperation.

Mexico, he said, is prepared to join its neighbours in working past the current difficulties to provide the best life for its residents.
