Exercise Tradewinds gets underway with paratrooper jump

Posted: Sunday, May 8, 2022. 10:02 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Multinational defense exercise Tradewinds 2022 was launched on Saturday with a Parade at Price Barracks, Ladyville. The ceremony had the participation of twenty-two countries.

The Belize Defence Force (BDF) said on social media as official hosts that it is “grateful for the opportunity to host such an important regional exercise,” which it has previously held four times. This year’s effort is in conjunction with Mexico.

Tradewinds is a Caribbean-based security initiative sponsored by Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) that focuses on the interoperability of Caribbean Nations to counter Transnational Criminal Organizations, enhancing regional collaboration, stability, and effective response to regional security threats and natural disasters. Force members are encouraged to use this opportunity to foster long-lasting relationships and to our brothers and sisters, enjoy our Jewel, the army said.

The exercise moved south today with parachuting into the Manatee Training area. According to the Belize Coast Guard, “Eight Belize Coast Guardsmen entered the landing zone, along with soldiers from the Belize Defence Force and paratroopers from Mexico, United States, and Colombia.”

A total of 150 paratroopers from a combination of 22 countries jumped from the US C-130 aircraft, at an average altitude of 1250 feet. These paratroopers will be receiving their multinational jump wings from the US Army.
