Village council elections are off and running as PUP claim first three slates

By Aaron Humes: The villages of Steadfast, Hummingbird Community, and Valley Community, all in the Stann Creek West constituency, have elected uncontested slates by the ruling People’s United Party in the first round of village council elections.

While actual elections begin next week, nominations were taken today countrywide between 9 a.m. and 12 noon.

In Stann Creek West, according to area representative Rodwell Ferguson, the party submitted nominations for six members and a chair for ten village councils. The opposition United Democratic Party, he said, appears not to have contested these villages in the upper Stann Creek District along the Hummingbird Highway.

The area rep offered his congratulations to those elected and best wishes to those heading to the polls in more than 160 villages over the next six weeks. By law, however, political affiliation is discarded when the new councils are sworn in. We’ll have more on the election schedule in a forthcoming story.
