By Benjamin Flowers: Their Royal highnesses, Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, are reportedly dropping several formalities associated with their official duties, reports the UK Metro.
Following their controversial Caribbean tour, the Duke and Duchess have decided that they will be called by their first names and that they want people to stop bowing/curtsying to them while they are on duty. The decision was reportedly taken to make them more approachable while on duty.
The Duke and Duchess had visited the Caribbean in March, on a tour that took them to Belize, Jamaica, and the Bahamas.
The tour, which was designed to strengthen ties with the royal family in the region ahead of the Queen’s 75th Platinum Jubilee, was described by critics as a “public relations disaster, which was marred by anti-colonial protests.
In Belize, villagers of Indian Creek held a protest saying that the Duke and Duchess were not welcome there; though later other villagers disassociated themselves from that protest and said they would be happy to receive the royal couple.
More protests awaited them in Jamaica, where protestors shouted at them that they were living off the “blood, sweat, and tears of slaves.” The Prince would later make a statement where he expressed his “profound sorrow” over slavery.
