By BBN Staff: A Punta Gorda resident caught public drinking alleges that his arresting police officer tried to extort $50 from him.
Police say that on Thursday, May 5, they found 43-year-old Pablo Makin on the corner of Cemetery Road and West Street drinking a beer.
In court, Makin wasted no time in pleading guilty to the charge and was fined $25 plus the $5 cost of court, which he paid immediately after his court appearance.
While speaking with the Magistrate he said that he had asked to use the bathroom while he was at the police station, and alleges that an officer suggested to him that he would not be charged if he paid $50.
The Magistrate asked Makin if he knew the officer and encouraged him to make a formal report to the police department’s Professional Standards Branch.
