Teenager charged with damage to property changes his plea from guilty to not guilty; remanded to prison

Posted: Monday, May 9, 2022. 11:10 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: An 18-year-old Belize City resident is on remand at the Belize Central Prison after pleading not guilty to a charge of damage to property.

Allegations are that Leslie Young Jr. had fired gunshots that caused damage to a woman’s home, on May 5, and he initially pleaded guilty to the charge.

But when asked if he was admitting that he was the one who fired the weapon that caused the damage, Young said no and decided to change his plea.

He said that he only pleaded guilty because he is the sole breadwinner in his home and did not want to waste the court’s time.

Due to the fact that the offense was committed with a firearm, he was mandatorily remanded to prison, and cannot apply for bail before 90 days.

Young is due back in court on July 12.
