Cruise tourism: Nearly 200 thousand have visited the Jewel so far in 2022

Posted: Wednesday, May 11, 2022. 9:32 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Belize Tourism Board (BTB) reports that in March of 2022, there were a total of 48 cruise ship calls with over 93,000 cruise passengers arriving in Belize. The total includes cruise arrivals from both cruise ports, Fort Street Tourism Village (FSTV) and Harvest Caye.

Like the overnight tourism arrival figures, cruise tourist arrivals have rebounded from their steep decline in 2020 and 2021 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

For the first quarter of 2022, some 199,229 passengers touched down in Belize, nearly as many as visited from the resumption of cruise ship visits in July of 2021 to December, a total of 210,206. Belize recorded 343,099 cruise ship arrivals in 2020 but all of them were in the first quarter before COVID took hold. Belize’s all-time record is 2019’s 1.17 million visitors, including 165 thousand in January of that year.

The Belize Tourism Board (BTB) says it “remains committed to working in partnership with its local and international industry stakeholders. Together, we will aggressively and effectively promote Belize as the leading tourism destination and achieve full recovery of the industry for the benefit of both Belizeans and visitors.”
