By BBN Staff: Today, newly appointed Supreme Court Justice Ricardo O’Neal Sandcroft delivered his first guilty verdict in the murder trial of 24-year-old Keon Dennison.
In a 50-page, 1 hour and 10-minute verdict, bringing the trial without jury to an end, Justice Sandcroft said that the prosecution had convinced him, beyond a reasonable doubt, that Dennison was guilty.
The Justice said he examined the evidence, such as the security camera footage which showed Dennison and co-accused Tyrone Reid, riding up to Perez’s business and one of the men shooting him in the neck while the other robbed the dying man of his cellphone. Sandcroft said he considered the lighting quality, the validity of the witness statements, and the caution statement given by Dennison where he stated that he was the one who stole the cellphone but did not fire the shot that killed Perez.
Sandcroft noted that in his own account, Dennison placed himself at the scene, and with all the other evidence, he accepted that Dennison was. His sentencing hearing has been set for June 16. Justice Sandcroft also ordered that the court must be provided with a Social Inquiry Report and also a Psychiatric Evaluation for Dennison a week prior to sentencing.
On April 12, Reid decided to plead guilty, following a Good Year Hearing, where the Judge informed him of what his sentence would be if he pleaded guilty instead of going to trial. Reid was sentenced to 30 years in prison, but with time on remand deducted, he has 18 years and 7 months left on his sentence.
