National Agriculture and Trade Show (NATS) Committee announces Farmers of the Year

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The National Agriculture and Trade Show (NATS) Committee on Wednesday announced the winners of the Farmer of the Year Competition.

The Men’s Farmer of the Year is Orlando Ek from the Corozal District.

The Women’s Farmer of the Year is Norma Figueroa from the Cayo District.

And the Junior Farmer of the Year is Darwin Orellana from the Belize District.

“The committee would like to congratulate all winners for their hard work and dedication in ensuring the sector remains vibrant and valuable to Belize’s resilience to climate and economic shocks,” said the NATS Committee in a press release issued by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise through the Government of Belize Press Office.

The NATS 2022 Committee also made special mention of Krystle Romero from the Toledo District. Romero is the 2nd place finisher in the Women’s Farmer of the Year category and was very close in points behind Figueroa.

“While the competition traditionally only recognizes the top finishers in each category, the evaluators felt that Ms. Romero, who can be classified as a junior female farmer, shows great potential for the future,” said the NATS Committee.

The National Agriculture and Trade Show (NATS) Committee is preparing for the National Agriculture and Trade Show 2022 set for the weekend of May 27-29.

This year’s Agric and Trade Show is being held under the theme “Innovations in Technology: Driving a Climate Resilient and Competitive Agriculture and Food Sector”.
