‘Online business registry one step closer to completion,’ says Companies and Corporate Affairs Registry

By Benjamin Flowers: The Belize Companies and Corporate Affairs Registry (BCCAR) announced today that it has reached an important milestone in the development of its Online Business Registry System (OBRS), which will dramatically improve the ease of starting a business in the country.

The BCCAR said that its goal of transforming the business environment through digital registration is even closer following the delivery of the first module of the OBRS by the consultant firm Norway Registers Development AS (NRD Companies).

The features of the first module are: User registration, Business Name reservation, Limited Liability Partnership registration, and the processing and verification of E-certificates via Quick Response (QR) codes.

“The shift to a digital and modern registry is essential to improve the ease of starting a business in Belize. This should support the formalization and growth of all businesses, in particular domestic micro, small & medium enterprises (MSMEs),” the BCCAR said. “The initiative is also key for positioning Belize as globally competitive and will complement major upgrades currently underway in Belize’s legal framework for regulating company life cycles.”

The BCCAR said that the launch of the new e-Registry system, which is due at the end of November 2022, form a part of a greater push being made over the past two years to enhance service delivery through digitizing processes. Companies will be issued new unique identifiers (company numbers) upon re-registration, and the system will incorporate the International Standard Industrial Classification of all Economic Activities (ISIC).

The BCCAR also said that it will “additionally launch Help Desk Centres in Belmopan and Belize City to provide access support to clients without internet or a digital device and will have customer service personnel on hand available to assist.”
