By Aaron Humes: Is tourism in Belize back?

The statistics from the Belize Tourism Board (BTB) say yes, somewhat.

Some 41,879 overnight visitors came to Belize in March, the highest figure since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The accompanying chart the Board provided shows that in February of 2020, 50,817 visitors came. That number slumped by more than half in March of 2020 to just 23 thousand as the pandemic took hold, and by April it was under 700.

The all-time recent high for tourist arrivals was in March of 2019 with 57,697.

For the first quarter of 2022, there were 97,778 total overnight tourist arrivals, an increase of 222.8 percent over 2021, which had 30,290. 2022’s figures recover 73 percent of the total number of arrivals in the first quarter of 2020 and nearly 62 percent in the first quarter of 2019.

Belize is on track to surpass 2021’s total figures of 218,991 overnight tourist arrivals as well as 2020’s 144,124 arrivals, though there will be some way to go to match 2019’s 503,166 arrivals – an all-time record. Belize has recorded no less than 10 thousand tourist arrivals every month since March of 2021.

The BTB notes, “Traditionally, March has been the peak of the tourism high season (Pre-Covid). With the steady growth in the first quarter, the outlook remains positive as Belize’s tourism industry rebounds.”
