Prime Minister believes that Alexis Rosado’s expertise in Belize/Guatemala dispute is more important than the allegations against him at this time

By Benjamin Flowers: In late April, Belize was rocked as one of its most senior diplomats, former Ambassador to the European Union Alexis Rosado was accused of rape and other sexual crimes. Today, Prime Minister John Briceño confirmed that Rosado is still assisting the Government of Belize (GOB) with its territorial dispute with Guatemala, as he is one of the only people qualified enough to do so.

On April 20, Rosado handed himself over to authorities and was charged with one count of rape, one charge of sexual assault, and six counts of aggravated assault of an indecent nature. GOB immediately stripped him of his ambassadorship and Rosado was no longer able to represent Belize in any official capacity.

Briceño said that Belize is preparing to submit its documents to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in June as the next phase in the territorial dispute plays out in court, and Rosado’s expertise is needed despite the accusations.

“We are right at the point where we are preparing our counter-memorial to present to the ICJ. Now god forbid that we do not use his expertise and because we do not use his expertise we go to court and there is some mix-up and we pay the consequences by losing a portion of Belize,” Briceño said.

He went on to say that in the face of such a loss, the public would condemn GOB for not doing everything possible to secure a win at the ICJ, and that government had failed in its responsibility to protect Belize’s sovereignty. He also went on to say that he is aware sexual abuse in Belize is rampant and that perpetrators must be punished; however, he stresses that due process must be followed.

“That kind of abuse is heinous and we need to do everything possible to go after the perpetrator, and Alexis Rosado is no exception, but before we get to that point it has to be determined whether he is innocent or he is guilty. Our system says that you are innocent until proven guilty,” Briceño added.

Back in 2021, the victim came out and reported to authorities that she allegedly had a sexual relationship with Rosado from she was 13 years old up to the time she was 27 years old.
