Predominantly black college institution Lincoln College in Illinois closes

By Aaron Humes: CNN reports that Lincoln College in central Illinois, the only school named for their favourite son Abraham Lincoln while he was living and opened in 1865, will close its doors on Friday.

The predominantly black institution has suffered significant challenges from Covid-19 and complications stemming from a recent cyberattack.

A statement from the college on its website said its current challenges are different from previous crises whether economic or infrastructural, as the pandemic taxed the institution’s financial resources for technology and campus safety measures even as student enrolment dropped.

Further complicating matters was a cyberattack in December that it said “thwarted admissions activities and hindered access to all institutional data, creating an unclear picture of Fall 2022 enrollment projections. All systems required for recruitment, retention, and fundraising efforts were inoperable.” As of summer 2021, Lincoln College had roughly 1,200 students.

Additionally, according to the statement, when the systems were restored in March 2022, there were “significant enrollment shortfalls, requiring a transformational donation or partnership to sustain Lincoln College beyond the current semester,” and, “Unfortunately, these efforts did not create long-term viability for Lincoln College in the face of the pandemic.”

Lincoln College held its final graduation ceremony Saturday.
