By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Two days before becoming a full-fledged cooperative the Orange Walk Beekeepers Pre-Cooperative signed sales agreements with Belize Marketing and Development Corporation (BMDC) for honey delivered on Wednesday, May 11.
“Members of the Orange Walk Beekeepers Pre- Co-operative brought honey today [Wednesday] to be weighed, tested and transferred to the BMDC Orange Walk facilities in the San Lorenzo area,” said the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE).
According to MAFSE, the beekeepers delivered buckets of honey after traceability tests were done by BMDC to ensure the origins of the honey, condition of apiaries, and tagging of the locations.
BMDC only buys from producers after proper inspection has taken place. Additionally, further tests of the newly arrived product are carried out at the San Lorenzo facilities.
“They were happy beekeepers after they signed sales agreements with BMDC for their product,” said MAFSE.
Cooperatives Registrar Gareth Murillo confirmed that the Orange Walk Beekeepers Pre-Cooperative will officially become a cooperative under the Department of Co-operatives on Friday.
