By Aaron Humes, Belmopan: The House of Representatives is to review a variety of legislation and motions at this morning’s sitting here in the capital.
All three of the Bills to be presented this morning replace outstanding legislation – the Companies Bill, 2022, will consolidate the Companies Act and International Business Companies Act and provide further provisions; the Senior Courts Bill, 2022, will repeal, replace and consolidate the Supreme Court of Judicature Act and Court of Appeal Act; and the Trade Licensing Bill will repeal the 2020 Trade Licensing Act.
Papers to lie on the table include the Lotteries Control (Amendment) Regulations, 2022, and the continued Caracol Road Upgrading Project contracts for lots 2A-C.
The Government will also seek approval of loan motions for $12.4 million from the World Bank for further COVID-19 emergency response including procuring more vaccines for distribution and various COVID-related supplies, and a further $50 million for the Ministry of Agriculture’s Climate Resilient and Sustainable Agriculture Program.
As we have previously reported, the House will signal its support for the Belize Advisory Council (BAC) to recommend that the Governor-General exercise the Prerogative of Mercy on Nora Parham, to declare her posthumously pardoned and revoke her 1963 conviction and sentence to death by hanging for the murder of her police officer partner.
The House will also signal its support for the Republic of China (Taiwan) participating in all international organizations in respect of its long friendship with and support of Belize and recognition of the role it can and continues to play in the world despite being claimed by the People’s Republic of China.
We’ll have all the stories for you from Belmopan as they happen.
