By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Prime Minister John Briceño apologized on behalf of his Administration to Nora Parham’s sons and family for what he called a ‘travesty of justice.

“Today, I rose to support the motion for a posthumous pardon for Nora Parham… the only woman ever executed by the state in Belize. Today rights a 59 year long wrong where a victim of domestic abuse was convicted and sentenced to the judicial penalty of hanging for the death of her partner abuser,” said the Prime Minister in a social media post on Thursday.

“It has been long believed that the conviction may well have been a miscarriage of justice.”

“Our Administration offers our apologies to her sons and family for the travesty of justice and recommits to our zero-tolerance against gender-based violence,” he wrote.

The Prime Minister’s apology was posted on social media after the House of Representatives passed a motion to move the Belize Advisory Council to advise the Governor General to exercise the Prerogative of Mercy, so that Parham could be pardoned.

The motion said that “Nora Parham was executed by British authorities under British law in a British colony”, which became the state of Belize at Independence in 1981.

Even though Parham was not hanged during any of Belize’s administrations post-independence, the Prime Minister apologized to the Parham family.

Parham was hanged on June 5, 1963, after she was found guilty and соnvісtеd оf thе murdеr оf роlісе оffісеr Кеtсhеll Тrарр іn Оrаngе Wаlk Тоwn. Раrhаm, who was a victim of dоmеѕtіс vіоlеnсе, аllеgеdlу ѕеt Тrарр оn fіrе аftеr аn аrgumеnt.

“Whеn І wаѕ аbоut ѕеvеn уеаrѕ оld, ѕоmе nіghtѕ І uѕе tо hаvе tо lеаvе hоmе аnd run tо thе роlісе ѕtаtіоn tо аѕk ѕоmеbоdу thеrе tо соmе аnd tаkе hіm оut thе hоuѕе,” said Harold Parham, Nora’s eldest son, on Friday in Belmopan. He attended the Special Sitting of the House of Representatives along with a number of his brothers and other family members.
