By Rubén Morales Iglesias: “I visited with Belize Electricity Limited in Chan Chen, Corozal where the final set of tests were being carried out prior to putting into service a new state-of-the-art 115 KV substation,” said Prime Minister John Briceño on Monday about his visit to Chan Chen in Corozal on Sunday.
“This is the first in a series of multi-million dollar investments being made by BEL over the next 5 years to transform the national grid into a modern energy delivery and distribution network.”
BEL confirmed on Sunday that the new Chan Chen Substation is officially on line.
“Our newest substation is now set to be the main source of power supply to Corozal Town, Corozal Free Zone, and San Pedro Village (Corozal),” said BEL.
“The new high voltage power lines connecting the substation allows for operational flexibility and increases the reliability of power in Northern Belize,” said BEL acknowledging the Prime Minister’s visit as their teams conducted preparatory works and commissioning.
The Prime Minister also said a new substation is being completed near Belcogen to supply power to Orange Walk Town and the villages in the Orange Walk District.
“Both facilities feature state-of-the-art protection, safety and maintenance-friendly features,” said Prime Minister Briceño.
“These two new substations, together costing $24 million Belize dollars, will replace the single substation at Buena Vista, and support Government’s renewable energy and energy sustainability goals.”
BEL said this Chan Chen substation reinforces their commitment of infrastructure investment to increase the reliability and resiliency of the national grid.
