By Aaron Humes: Sports Illustrated (SI) has long been an authoritative voice in the world of sport, and through its world-famous swimsuit magazine it has set standards of beauty and excellence among the models and athletes who pose for it.

This year’s issue was shot partially on location in Belize, with home base in Placencia, Stann Creek District, and features a distinctive group of models – Jasmine Sanders, Hunter McGrady, Kate Bock, Natalie Mariduena, Leyna Bloom, and lead model Maye Musk, photographed by the world-famous photographer Yu Tsai.

Maye Musk, according to SI, “began her modeling career more than 50 years ago and continues to break ageist boundaries today with appearances on magazine covers and in campaigns in her 70s. In fact, Musk became CoverGirl’s oldest spokesmodel at age 69. But that’s just one of the many accomplishments the 74-year-old has on her résumé. Musk holds two master’s degrees and penned a memoir, A Woman Makes a Plan: Advice for a Lifetime of Adventure, Beauty, and Success, about her extraordinary life. All of Musk’s success certainly didn’t happen overnight. In her book, she details the struggles of raising three children—including billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk—as a single mom. She even had to work five jobs at once to make ends meet.”

Musk joins a world-famous trio – Kim Kardashian, Ciara, and recording artist Yumi Nu – as SI Swimsuit 2022 cover models. The four groundbreaking women were photographed separately in locations worldwide, from Dominican Republic to Barbados to Belize and Montenegro, with models as diverse in their stories as the locations they were photographed. The 59th issue of the magazine “celebrates 28 powerful women in an inclusive range of backgrounds and body types”.

“The journey we’ve been on—to break out of the mold the world put us in—may sound familiar,” said SI Swimsuit editor in chief MJ Day. “It’s certainly familiar to the women we’ve chosen to be our cover models: Maye, Ciara, Yumi, Kim.”

As for Belize SI’s write-up notes, “Belizeans are proudly committed to preserving the country’s unique charms and pristine natural landscape. Beyond the natural wonders, archaeological marvels and adrenaline-inducing adventures, it is truly the warmth of the Belizean people that makes Belize so special. The blending of cultures in Belize has resulted in one of the happiest and most peaceful countries in the region, and has garnered a widespread reputation as one of the world’s friendliest destinations.”

“Belize’s feature in the magazine and on the cover represents an extraordinary success for the country,” commented Anthony Mahler, Minister of Tourism & Diaspora Relations. “Furthermore, the feature is a part of the growing worldwide recognition of Belize’s value as a unique and premier tourist destination.”

The Tourism Board issued its thanks to all who partnered with Sports Illustrated for the 2022 Issue of the Swimsuit Magazine, Naia Resort & Spa and the Belize Collection (Sleeping Giant Resort). That list includes Tropic Air, Darah’s Travel, Splash Dive Center, Wendy’s Restaurant, Palmetto Grove, Bocawina Rainforest Resort, Belize Institute of Archaeology, Football Federation of Belize, Belize Under U20 Female Football team, Ministry of Health and Wellness, the K’iinich Ajaw Poktapok Team, and Traveller’s Liquors.
