By Aaron Humes: The Tren Maya, a train track from Palenque to Chetumal crossing southeastern Mexico may potentially be extending into Belize.
Prime Minister John Briceno announced in the House of Representatives on Friday that the project is under study by the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) in order to “ensure that the economics works and that it can be feasible.”
It brings benefits in potential tourism and trade by improving transportation in northern Belize, he said.
The project unites the major cities of the Yucatan Peninsula, from Merida, Cancun, Tulum, and Isla Mujeres in the north to Playa del Carmen and Chetumal in the south, and would likely access Belize through Corozal Town or perhaps Ambergris Caye.
However, at least one section is on hold pending a legal challenge from a conservation organization looking to stop the project.
