By Benjamin Flowers: Leaders from across the Caribbean are in Bridgetown, Barbados, this week for the Caribbean Local Government Conference, and Belize has representation from both the Belize City and Belmopan City Councils at the event.
Belize City Mayor Bernard Wagner is at the conference along with City Councillor Natasha Pipersburgh, while Belmopan City Mayor Sharon Palacio is accompanied by Councilor Nikki Augustine & Finance Director, Melvin Edenojie.
The three-day event, being observed under the theme “Building Back Better: Local Government Delivering Development in the Caribbean,” is a regional conference of the Commonwealth Local Government Forum (CLGF) and the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) with the support of the European Union.
The meeting will focus on three main areas: Women in local government and future priorities for the Commonwealth Women in Local Government Network; COVID recovery and building local resilience in the region; and The importance of good financial management – and feeding back the results of an exciting collaborative project between CLGF and CDB.
Day one of the conference was a session on women: Beyond the numbers – local action for women’s political and economic empowerment.
