By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Department of Co-operatives had an open-air meeting on Tuesday with the Corozal Cattle Group and representatives of Belize Livestock Producers Association (BLPA) in Ranchito, Corozal.
According to the Department of Co-Operatives, the Corozal Cattle Group has expressed interest in registering as a cooperative. So far, the group has attended a number of preliminary workshops, said the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE).
Last Friday, the Orange Walk Orange Walk Beekeepers Group became the Orange Walk Beekeepers Co-operative Society Ltd, a full-fledged cooperative registered under the Department of Co-operatives.
According to the Registrar of Cooperatives Gareth Murillo, the Orange Walk Beekeepers Group had to undergo eight different training sessions before it was approved to become a cooperative. At present, Murillo said that two Corozal groups, namely the Concepcion Vegetable Farmers and the Northern Sustainable Agro Producers of Xaibe, will qualify to become cooperatives in early June.
The eight training sessions are subdivided into four broad topics: Organizational Development, Financial Literacy and Personal Development, Entrepreneurial Development, and the Structure, Administration, and Finance of the Cooperative Model.
