By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Friends for Conservation and Development – FCD Belize says it recommends a full investigation into the weekend Mountain Pine Ridge fire.

In a social media post, FCD Belize said it appears negligence caused the weekend fire at Baldy Beacon in the Mountain Pine Ridge.

FCD Belize said the fire caused damage primarily in private/public lands and not in the forest reserve pointing out that, nonetheless, it led to a “dramatic loss of the sensitive ecosystem on those high elevated areas”.

“It is unknown at this time how much was lost but certainly is on the 100’s of acres,” said FCD Belize.

“Fires affect habitat, wildlife, human property, and human health, everyone must be alert; therefore, to ensure that fires are not started carelessly.”

FCD Belize said it joined the efforts of the Forest Department and private landowners to control the fire.

“The Forest Department was pivotal in containing the fire with their expertise and equipment,” said FCD Belize.
