By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Mexico’s Agriculture Secretary Dr. Víctor Manuel Villalobos Arámbula will be the guest speaker at the opening of the National Agriculture & Trade Show which will be held from May 27-29 in Belmopan.
With the growing relationship between Belize and Mexico in agriculture, it’s no surprise that Belize’s Minister of Agriculture Jose Abelardo Mai has invited his Mexican counterpart to be the main speaker at the Agric Show’s opening.
Last year, Mai met on a couple of occasions with Villalobos in his open efforts to open Mexican markets to Belize’s products, mainly livestock. And while Mai managed to convince Villalobos Arámbula to sign a number of agriculture and technical collaboration agreements, the relationship with Mexico has gotten tighter with the state visit by Prime Minister John Briceño to Mexico in October/November 2021 and the subsequent visit by Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to Belize last month.
The President’s announcement that he was lifting tariffs on Belize agricultural products exported to Mexico, including livestock, further cements the good relationship Belize and Mexico are developing.
Mexico can still offer Belize more in areas of cooperation and the Agriculture Secretary’s visit on the occasion of Belize’s grandest agriculture and trade show signals greater cooperation in the agriculture field.
