By BBN Staff: Twenty-seven-year-old Andres Valle Diaz, who pled guilty to the manslaughter of Kelvin Hernandez, has been sentenced to 13 years in prison.
His sentence was handed down today in the Dangriga Supreme Court by Justice Antionette Moore, following a trial without jury. The two years he spent on remand has been deducted, leaving him with 11 years left to serve on his sentence.
The incident happened in Hope Creek Village, Stann Creek, back in August 17, 2019. Diaz was passing a basketball court in the village when he saw Hernandez sitting under a tree. He got off his motorcycle, grabbed a machete he had with him and chopped Hernandez twice to the neck.
Diaz was arrested in 2020 for an unlicensed firearm, and while detained for that offense was indicted for murder.
In March 2022, he pled guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter.
