By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belmopan City Council (BCC) has named Mrs. Elma Yvonne Martinez Barcelona Arzu as their Woman of the Week.
Referring to Arzu as a pioneer who taught for 52 years, the Belmopan City Council said it recognizes Arzu’s significant contribution to education throughout Belize.
“We take this opportunity to thank her for five decades of her outstanding service to the jewel,” said the BCCl in a social media post.
Now retired, Arzu taught English, African/Caribbean Literature, and Education at the Belmopan Comprehensive School and the University of Belize.
The BBC said that Arzu had a word of advice for young people.
“Walk the Straight and Narrow Path, Honor your father and mother, Listen to adults in society; not only listen to them but also ask questions so that you can follow the path that you see as an example to create a better society,” says Arzu said the BCC.
Arzu also advised young people to participate in activities at church, school, and at home. She herself is into reading, singing, traveling, and going to church.
Arzu has been living in Belmopan since 1978.
