By Aaron Humes: Police are investigating a reported robbery on Tuesday night that left two police officers needing treatment after the group of bandits made a daring assault and escape.

According to police one Micias Tzib, originally from San Antonio, Cayo District, but living and working on the Kukulkan resort property in San Ignacio Town told them he was ambushed in his room by five men in camouflage clothing and masks who tied him up and demanding the Toyota Land Cruiser SUV usually parked at the location. As it turns out, it and its owner were not there at the time.

A guest in the main house, Isai Figueroa, was along with three minor children at the main house on the property when they witnessed one of the robbers walking towards Tzib’s room, then gesturing with his hands as if to call others to come.

Figueroa and the children went to hide behind their residence, but they heard the men entering their room and conversing. The group stole various electronics, accessories, a cellular phone, and the keys for a 2012 Nissan Rogue which was parked in the garage in front of Tzib’s room, in which they escaped.

Police further state that as they were responding to the scene around 10:20 p.m., they encountered the stolen vehicle coming from the area at full speed. They set up to try to intercept the vehicle but it blasted through, knocking down officer Danie Che as he jumped toward the bushes. He was injured to the head and had abrasions to the body. The men also shot toward the officers, injuring a second officer, Corporal Jackelyn Guzman in the left foot above the knee. A second police mobile trailed the vehicle to the hammock bridge in Calla Creek where it was abandoned with lights on, keys in the ignition, and damage to the right front fender. There was no sign of the robbers.

The officers are being treated for their injuries and investigations continue.
