By BBN Staff: Following the May 2019 shooting death of his common-law-wife, Noehemy Caseres; Andrew Caliz has pleaded to the lesser charge of manslaughter by negligence.
Caliz was originally charged with murder, but in a caution statement given to police, he said that he and Caseres were getting ready to leave La Cabana in Big Falls Village, Toledo District to head to Belize City when she bumped into him and his licensed firearm went off.
Caceres was shot to the upper right side of the back. Caliz further said he sought assistance to get her to the hospital in Punta Gorda Town, but she later died of the injury.
He was arrested shortly after and remanded to the Belize Central Prison. On April 21, he indicated to the court through his attorney that he wanted to plead guilty to the lesser charge and the prosecution accepted. At his sentencing hearing yesterday, Caliz was given three years for his guilty plea.
The court deducted the year and a half he spent on remand and said that Caliz will spend the remaining year and a half on probation.
