Calypso Rose’s ‘Watina’ featuring Carlos Santana and the Garifuna Collective released today

Posted: Thursday, May 19, 2022. 3:29 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: Today, Trinidadian musician legend Calypso Rose officially released her cover of “Watina” the title track from the late great Andy Palacio’s final, award-winning album by the same name.

The song and accompanying video blends old and new, featuring vocals and music from the Garifuna Collective, and world-renowned guitarist Carlos Santana helping to provide a unique sound for a fitting tribute to the late Nobel Peace Prize winner. While the original was sung entirely in Garifuna, Calypso Rose’s cover is sung primarily in Kriol. The song is also slightly more upbeat and horns are added to the instrumental to form a key piece of the overall sound.

“‘Watina’ my new title is out now with the precious help of Santana & The Garifuna collective, hope you’ll enjoy all the joy that we put into it! ” Calypso Rose said on her official Facebook page in commemoration of the release.

Following the release, Calypso Rose also posted a brief video of Carlos Santana, giving his thoughts on her and her contribution to music.

“I see Calypso Rose as a goddess of Musica del Caribe,” Santana said, “a person who offers her heart and changes people’s lives and destiny.”

The video can be seen here.
