By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The National Stakeholders Platform Technical Committee met on Tuesday, May 17, to plan training for coconut farmers so they are better prepared to fight diseases that affect the coconut industry, said the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE).
The first training will be carried out in Red Bank in the Stann Creek District at 9:00 am on Friday, June 3.
The training will look at ways to control the Coconut Beetle using Integrated Pest Control Methodology.
“Adult beetles cause damage to palms by boring holes into the central growing point of the crown to feed on the young host tissue sap (juice),” said MAFSE.
The Ministry’s aim is to grow the coconut industry. However, for it to be done effectively the farmers have to be well trained to avert problems such as the Coconut Beetle.
