Senate to discuss COVID loan, Nora Parham, Taiwan and appointments to Integrity Commission

By Aaron Humes: The Upper Chamber meets on Friday in Belmopan at an earlier start time of 9 a.m.

On the Orders of the Day listed are several motions brought from the House of Representatives as well as the papers for the Lotteries Control (Amendment) Regulations and Caracol Road contracts.

These include the loan motion for COVID-19 emergency response of $12 million from the World Bank; the prerogative of mercy motion for Nora Parham; and the support of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to participate in international organizations.

But under its unique powers, Senators will also be asked to review and approve the appointment of the Integrity Commission, with attorney Andrea McSweaney McKoy as chair, and members Katherine Meighan, Zoe Roberson Zetina, Ricardo Moguel, accountant George R. Swift, attorney Payal Ghanwani and Jaraad Ysaguirre. We’ll have more on that in a separate story.

This will be the first official Senate meeting for new members Beverly Williams and Antonio Herrera, both nominated in the interregnum between meetings by new United Democratic Party leader and Leader of the Opposition Moses “Shyne” Barrow.
