By Aaron Humes: President of the Belize National Teachers Union Senator Elena Smith told the media that the Employee Assistance Program, according to the Ministry of Education, is applicable to teachers as well but the program is lacking.
She said there is a need for a specific system for the teaching profession because of what Executive Secretary Keesha Young called a “special level of stress” teachers experience on a daily basis.
At least one school management does provide access to counselors but the Ministry of Education and school management should be responsible for the continuous development of strategies to address these issues.
That includes regular training of administrators and local managers including being able to recognize issues and assess them. Smith says the administration should not be selected for their political, religious, and other affiliation.
