By Benjamin Flowers: The Sarteneja Alliance for Conservation and Development recovered the carcass of a female jaguar this week and believes that it was knocked down and killed.

The SACD said that the carcass was found on Wednesday, May 18, on the Sarteneja – Chunox road, just a few miles before entering Sarteneja village, and determined that it was that of a juvenile female which weighed about 80 pounds.

“The cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head, most likely caused by a car collision while crossing the road,” the SACD said. “Jaguars are a protected species under the Belize Wildlife Protection Act, and so we urge drivers to use caution and be prepared to react and avoid animals on the road.

The conservation NGO noted that drivers are travelling at higher speeds due to the upgrade being done to the Sarteneja-Corozal road, which increases the possibility of such collisions.

“Animals are not instinctively aware of the dangers of roads. Based on the young age of this Jaguar it may well have been the first road she encountered… and also her last,” the organization added.

The SACD called on all drivers to drive responsibly to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.

In 2017, Jaguars were listed as “threatened” on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, due to a 20-25 percent decline over the past three generations (21 years) in areas of occupancy, extent of occurrence, and habitat quality, along with actual or potential levels of exploitation.
