Belize repays Taiwan for investments with support to join international organizations

By Aaron Humes: The Senate approved a motion to support the Republic of China (Taiwan)’s participation in all related international organizations, including the United Nations, the World Health Assembly (WHA), the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL), the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The gesture recognizes 33 years of diplomatic ties between Belize and Taiwan and their continuous support from across oceans in numerous areas, “ranging from infrastructure, medical and public health, agriculture, sustainable environment, information and communication technology to culture and education.”

An example pointed to by Senator Antonio Herrera in supporting the motion is the Corozal-Sarteneja Road now under construction: “We would like to thank the people and government of Taiwan for having granted the dream to have a paved road, two bridges, [costing] $100 million, afforded to the Government of Belize under our tenure.”

Per the resolution, a copy of the resolution will be transmitted to Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen through the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and to the Office of the Prime Minister as a tangible token of the friendship expressed herein.
