Did “police” rob a Hope Creek woman? Two suspects sought

Posted: Saturday, May 21, 2022. 12:11 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: A police report names two men, Oscar Flamenco and Rowley Badillo, from the Cayo District as wanted in connection with a home invasion in Hope Creek, Stann Creek District on Thursday night which involved some clever impersonation.

The Department maintains that the wanted men are not police officers or otherwise aligned with the Department and warn Belizeans to be on the lookout for them.

The victim, 57-year-old Esther Crispia, reported to the real police that she was at home around 10 p.m. when three men entered in camouflage uniforms, military-style boots, and carrying firearms and handcuffs.

All three of the men told her that they were police officers and that they were there to search for illegal firearms and drugs. A second man began to search the house and particularly behind her bed where she kept a cardboard box with sheets and other household items.

From this, police say, he retrieved a red and white crocus bag containing $130,000 in Belizean and U.S. currency. This man informed the complainant that the money would be taken to the police station as he believed it was the proceeds of a drug sale; if she wanted it back, he said, she had to bring proof that it was what she said it was. The men left after returning her cell phone which they had confiscated when they began searching the house.

The trio and a fourth man waiting in the yard went to what appeared to be a marked police vehicle in front of an empty lot, taking the money with them.

According to the complainant, the money was obtained from the sale of a house sometime in 2021 in Guatemala and was not declared when transported to Belize.

We understand that Police have taken statements and obtained video footage of the vehicle the men used to get away and another similar vehicle seen in the area patrolling. Their investigations continue.
