Indian couple sue their only son for not giving them grandchildren

By Benjamin Flowers: A couple in India, who feel robbed of the joy of being grandparents are suing their only son and his wife for not having any children of their own, CNN reports.

Sadhana Prasad, 61, and Sanjeev Prasad, 57, who live in Haridwar, a city in northern Uttarakhand State, filed a petition seeking 50 million Indian rupees (about US$643,000) in damages, if their son 35 and his wife, 31 do not have a child within a year.

The parents say that they spent their life’s savings raising and educating their son, sending him to the US to become a pilot, and paid for a lavish wedding for him and his wife in 2016. They said that they also paid for the wedding reception which was held in a five-star hotel, a luxury car worth US$80,000 and a honeymoon abroad. But now, six years later, they have nothing to show for their investment by way of grandchildren.

The couple’s legal representative said “They see people in their neighborhood playing with their grandchildren and feel like they should also have one.
“They said they didn’t marry (their son and daughter-in-law) off so that they can live alone … So they said that in the next year, either give us a grandchild or give us compensation.”

The son and his wife have refrained from making any public statements regarding the issue.
