Belize’s Foreign Minister calls for greater collaboration among CARICOM Nations at recent regional meeting

Posted: Sunday, May 22, 2022. 11:19 am CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade, and Immigration Eamon Courtenay; speaking at the recent 25th CARICOM Council for Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR), called for greater collaboration between countries in the region, to survive the global challenges affecting all member nations.

Courtenay, the outgoing COFCOR Chairman, highlighted a number of pertinent issues including geopolitical tensions and the erosion of multilateralism, the assassination of Haitian President Juvenal Moïse, the war in Ukraine, and the worrying economic outlook because of the COVID-19 pandemic, as matters that needed the attention of Caricom.

“The challenges ahead are immense; the crises continue to come; the international system is in flux. Unity and firmness in our resolve are the only weapons we have,” Courtenay said.

He stressed that working with funding institutions and G20 nations is paramount to building on the success that the region has seen thus far in terms of securing concessional development financing and for international partners to consider the peculiar vulnerabilities of Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

NY Carib News reports that Courtenay also called on CARICOM nations to “resist any and all efforts to impose division in the global south”.
