By Benjamin Flowers: The official 2022 Atlantic Hurricane Season is fast approaching, and while the season started early this year, weather data from the United States National Hurricane Center shows that there is currently no weather system in the region that will impact Belize.
The latest Tropical Weather Outlook, produced by the NHC at midday, showed only an area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms is associated with a surface trough of low pressure over the north-central Gulf of Mexico. The NHC said that surface pressures remain high and that environmental conditions do not appear favorable for significant development before this system moves inland over the central Gulf Coast in a day or so.
“Regardless of development, the system could produce heavy rainfall and gusty winds over portions of the central Gulf Coast from southeastern Louisiana to the western Florida Panhandle,” the NHC said.
Meanwhile, there are no tropical cyclones or disturbances in the Atlantic, Eastern North Pacific, or Central North Pacific at this time.
On May 8, the NHC began monitoring the first tropical wave of the year, which emerged off the west coast of Africa.
The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has said that the outlook for the 2022 Atlantic Hurricane Season calls for 19 named storms, 9 hurricanes, and 4 major hurricanes. An average hurricane season in the Atlantic is said to feature 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes.
