By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize participated in the 32nd Board of Governors meeting of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the GCF Technical Dialogue for the Caribbean at Nelson Dockyard in Antigua and Barbuda. Both the Board of Governors meeting and the Technical Dialogue were held from May 19 to 21.
Belize was represented by Carlos Pol, Director of the Climate Finance Unit (CFU) in the Ministry of Economic Development, and Leroy Martinez, Economist/GCF Focal Point at the CFU.
National Designated Authorities (NDA), Direct Access Entities (DAE), other funding agencies, and GCF stakeholders gathered in Antigua and Barbuda. They met to discuss how finance and technical assistance for transformative projects can be better accessed and mobilized so as to facilitate the transition to a low-carbon and more climate-resilient Caribbean region.
“[The Green Climate Fund meeting] allows for greater partnership among SIDS (Small Island Developing States) and serves as the right platform to present a Caribbean perspective to the GCF on the actual needs of our vulnerable countries,” said Pol.
“Having key players in one setting allows for better cooperation and collaboration.”
The CFU representatives held bilateral meetings with high-level officials from the GCF, the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre, the Central American Bank for Economic Integration, Global Environmental Fund, and other NDAs and DAEs. In these meetings, they discussed upcoming projects and the accreditation of national entities such as the Belize Social Investment Fund and the Ministry of Economic Development said the GOB Press Office release.
Pol thanked the GCF and the Government of Antigua and Barbuda for the invitation and excellent hospitality on behalf of Dr. Osmond Martinez, CEO of the Ministry of Economic Development and the GCF NDA in Belize.
