KHMH bomb threat caused by mental patient – Police unsure if charges will be filed

By Benjamin Flowers: Police have confirmed that the bomb threat call made at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) on May 13 was made by a mental patient, leaving police unsure if any charges will actually be filed.

Assistant Superintendent of Police, Fitzroy Yearwood, head of communications for the Office of the Commissioner of Police, said today that a police investigation revealed that the female mental patient was receiving treatment at the KHMH and had demanded to leave. Yearwood said that the doctors were uncomfortable with letting her out in her condition and in response she made a call to authorities, claiming that there was a bomb in the facility.

“Whether or not charges will be levied against her, that will be determined by the court and doctors, whether she is fit to stand trial,” Yearwood said.

The incident was the first of its kind at the facility, and the hospital’s managing authority said that staff moved quickly and efficiently to evacuate, and were guided by evacuation protocols that were already in place for incidents such as natural disasters.
