“Officers must show ID before they enter your home,” says Belize Police, following home invasion by Fake Cop

By Benjamin Flowers: The Belize Police Department is urging the public to ask officers seeking access to their homes or yards to properly identify themselves before they gain that access.

Today, Head of Communications for the Office of the Commissioner of Police, ASP Fitzroy Yearwood, said that police officers have all been recently issued an official police department identification card which carries the officer’s name, social security number, height, and date of enlistment.

“If the police come to your house not displaying or showing you their identification cards, then you know that they are not police officers,” Yearwood said. “When you ask an officer for his name, that person must identify himself to you. Yes we can search the premises without a warrant for drugs and ammunition but at the same time they must identify themselves properly to you before gaining access to your premises.”

Yearwood’s warning comes after a Hope Creek resident was robbed last week, by three men pretending to be police officers. The men, dressed in full camouflage uniforms, entered her house under the guise that they were conducting a search for illegal drugs, guns, and ammunition, and took from her a bag containing around BZ$130,000 in different currencies. They told her that they believe the money was gained from the sale of illegal drugs, and if she wanted it back she would have to provide proof that the money was earned otherwise.

The men then got into a white Ford F-150 pickup with a Cayo license plate, being driven by a fourth man in camouflage gear and drove off. Later it was discovered that the men were not police officers. Police are looking for two men from Bullet Tree in connection with the incident.
