By Benjamin Flowers: Last Week, Ladyville resident Denise Pitts told the media that a police officer had broken her collarbone while responding to a fight at a local bar. Pitts says that she tried to make a report against the officer but was turned away. Today, Head of Communications for the Office of the Commissioner of Police ASP Fitzroy Yearwood, made a plea for Pitts to return to make that report.

Yearwood said that he was disappointed in whatever officer spoke with Pitts, stressing that the officer had given her “bad advice.” He stressed that all Belizeans have a right to make a report about a police officer that has committed some infraction in carrying out his/her duties and that in the Eastern Police division, such a report is made at the Professional Standards Branch (PSB).

“That officer was being mischievous for turning away that lady from the station, not recording a statement from her, or advising her to come to the PSB,” Yearwood said.

He noted that he will have officers reach out to Pitts today, in an effort to get her in to make a statement so an investigation can be launched into which officer caused her harm.

In an interview with Channel 5 last week, Pitts explained that she was not a part of the altercation at the bar and asked the officer if she could go back into the establishment. The officer reportedly responded by slamming her to the ground, causing her injury.

Pitts said that she is seeking financial compensation as she is a mother of four and will not be able to work due to her injury.
