Police still looking into the poisoning of the San Vicente water supply; No arrests made as yet

Posted: Monday, May 23, 2022. 5:38 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: On May 16, an unknown entity contaminated the water supply of San Vicente Village in the Toledo District. While one suspect was detained shortly after, police confirmed that the person was later released.

Head of Communications for the Office of the Commissioner of Police, ASP Fitzroy Yearwood, said today that no one has been charged in connection with the incident to date, but that police are looking seriously at the matter.

Yearwood said that poisoning the water supply had such far-reaching implications that it amounted to an act of public terrorism. He also stressed that given the reliance of the villagers on the water system, any people could have been seriously harmed or worse.

“We are not letting go of that investigation and as an arrest is made I will let you know,” Yearwood said.

The Pesticide Control Board issued a statement following the incident, explaining that the act was committed with a substance called Malathion 57 EC, and that the substance used in the incident was brought into Belize illegally because the formulation found in the water supply is not a formulation registered for use in Belize.
